What is Anime?

This month we are going to get involved and get to know anime in a deep way, many have probably heard it, they know what we are talking about or some may see it in their day to day, anime is itself a cinematographic genre that involves the animation process of different manga characters But if you are not familiar with this new trend that has enchanted the young people of today, we suggest you be attentive this month to 123pormi for content on this topic.

The concept of anime was born in Japanese culture, alluding to animation, in this case, cartoons of Japanese origin. This is a global cultural and entertainment phenomenon. It is an art that is linked to manga, an illustration technique generally used in Japanese comics and cosplay, which we will talk about in future articles. Anime works were often drawn manually, although digital creations have become popular in recent years. The classic style of Japanese animation began to take shape in the 1960s. Characters with very large eyes, thin lips, and distinctive hair constitute one of the most salient features of anime. The expressiveness of the faces, on the other hand, differentiates these drawings from the most common in Western animation.

Internationally, anime once carried the popular name «Japanimation», but this term has fallen into disuse. Fans pronounced the word preferably as an abbreviation of the phrase «Japanese Animation». It saw its greatest use during the 1970s and 1980s, generally comprising the first and second waves of anime fandom. The term survived until at least the early 1990s, but it seemed to disappear just before the resurgence of anime in the mid-1990s. We could say that anime has gone through everything, from being a locally known art to being one of the international trends that most attracts the attention of young people.

As with all art, anime also underwent a great evolution, we bear in mind that since the 60’s anime took shape and began to be as we know it now, but it was born much longer ago. The history of anime has its origins in 1910, being at that time a form of art or cultural expression, with small animations in order to entertain children. Later in 1917, with the arrival of industrialization in Japan, anime began to become small short films. Thus, the first short film that could be considered an anime, lasted only 2 minutes and was called «Namakura Gatana». As of 1958, larger productions began to be prepared but it was not until the late 1960s, when anime with characteristics similar to those we know today were truly present.

One of the first series that took the world by surprise was created in the 60s, by the writer, cartoonist and producer Osamu Tezuka, who was the creator of the mythical series «Tetsuwan Atomu» that became known in the whole world as «Astroboy». Probably some people who are reading this will recognize the series as part of his childhood, I personally did not have the opportunity to grow up with this series, but it was definitely one of the best known series in the West.
At the beginning of the 90s, anime happened to generate an international explosion, and a large number of film studios began to develop anime as a source of mass entertainment. This would be the most productive time for anime, when it went global, taking large corporations like Bandai or Studio Ghibli to the top. Anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon or Pokémon stand out here.
